This year, I’m thinking about what to give my husband for our preschoolaged daughter We’ve designed photo albums, mugs, and personalized tshirts I want to give him something very special this year Do you have any ideas
Last year, I took my daughter to the dollar store to pick out gifts for her dad I think I told her to buy five things It was hilarious I basically gave her carte blanche to choose whatever she wanted, whatever she thought he’d like I bought him LED Easter lights, a timer, some cheap candyshaped lip gloss, and a giant lollipop He loved them, so now we give him gifts for his birthday and Christmas Is it junk Yes But it’s also really important to us that he understands that gifts are mutual and that when he chooses them, they’re really from him
Ask your child They might have a really funny or hilarious suggestion
I’m a dad I don’t speak for all dads, but I prefer spending time with my family than giving gifts Even so, if a gift comes from a child, let it be theirs If it’s homemade or designed, even better Give your child time to get into the holiday spirit and get started For example, buy a wooden box from a craft store, with enough room for pens and pencils, and let them paint and decorate it Or a wooden frame Another example let them make bracelets for other people my daughter made them last year for her pediatrician, her grandparents, her allergist, and her teachers
Have you ever read a Wonderbly book There’s one about Daddy, the superhero it’s adorable Have your daughter organize a fatherdaughter date Let her pick out something she’d like I let my kids, even as young as three, pick out five things for their parents or grandparents at the dollar store The first year, it was all their requests, but now they understand that they’re picking things out for someone else and are giving it serious thought For my grandparents’ last birthday, my dad spent about 15 minutes picking out a loofah because he noticed the one in Grandma’s bathroom looked just like ours when you threw it away
What are their hobbies We selected personalized guitar picks with the names of the father and preschooler so they can play music together
My husband loves socks with our son’s face on them
Does your child like Lego My daughter really wanted to buy a Lego kitten to make with her dad what an interesting idea, and there are so many possibilities There’s also a company that lets you turn your children’s faces or drawings into socks That would be so cute
Does he go to school Does he draw at school or at home You could create a book of his most recent works, whether several or just a few of his favorites Include a piece he made specifically for this gift If he can write his name including his initial, ask him to sign it and dictate a message, such as, “Merry Christmas, I love you, Dad, I love you name”
My husband likes to wear matching clothes with our 4yearold son They wear matching sweaters, shirts, and swimsuits
Some Pandora stores offer a screen where you can personalize your jewelry Could your child draw something and put it on a necklace Or simply buy the charm and turn it into a keychain
I go shopping with my daughter and let her choose Last year, she insisted she needed a game where you put a bone in a dog’s mouth and then let it defecate There were scoops to “catch” the substance Was it completely ridiculous Yes But they spent hours playing the poop game
How about a Shreddy Dink Depending on your child’s age, you can make a handprint or a footprint If your child is older, you can ask them to draw something like their family and then make it into a keychain
For my husband’s birthday, she picked out a Pokmon coloring book for them to color together
My daughter loves baseball caps, and so does my dad her grandfather So I bought them matching caps from our local NFL team I think the years when kids yearn to keep up with their beloved adults are passing quickly So enjoy them
Michael’s has wooden frames for 099 They require a plaster base, but then I let my son paint them and choose a picture to put inside A fun and inexpensive craft where your child can also have input and unleash their creativity The frames are inexpensivethey don’t have glass or Plexiglasbut they’re very pretty
