Hello, I live with very Christian relatives and I have to hide my customs a bit. I’ve decided to decorate my tree with some feathers from my collection. Do you have any other suggestions?
Ninety percent of Christmas comes from Nordic traditions. Of course, it can be enhanced with more Nordic statues, but the decorations, etc., are already odes to the gods. You just have to remember who they’re really for.
I have decorations for a lot of the gods: Odin is getting a god’s eye tree ornament, Frigg will get knitting needles, Njord will get a ship, etc. I’m still looking for something for Loki, since I celebrate him on New Year’s Eve and the transition from old to new suits him wonderfully. And for Eir this year, since she just came into my life, I’m thinking of hanging up some of the herbs I dried for her. For Thor, I’ll be using Mjolnir, and I have a little Marvel Thor. I’ll probably do the same for Loki, since I think he’d appreciate his Marvel representation, and I think it’s funny that he’s wearing a costume, too. I understand what you’re saying about Odin being a little intimidating, but it helped me realize that Santa is one version of him. It’s a lot harder to be scared of Santa when you’re not a two-year-old being forced to take pictures at the mall, so this helped. I’d suggest a Santa Claus or a traditional Santa Claus decoration would also be a good costume for him. I have a really cute little nightlight with a forest on it. Santa Claus, which I also consider his.
