It’s Christmas, and I don’t know what to get him. He doesn’t drink. He takes care of his health. He loves books and motivational speeches. He’s very funny and always smiling. He doesn’t smoke. Plus, he has a daughter. I was thinking of getting him T-shirts, but I guess everyone else is thinking about that, plus socks and cologne. Do you have any other ideas? On a student budget?
If I were a guy over 50 I would want a sword.
As a guy over 50, I don’t buy him cologne, a shirt, or socks. Unless they’re funny socks. I’m always happy to receive a good pair of funny socks. Cooking? A cookbook with an interesting topic is a plus. Barbecue or grilling? Sauces, spices, and utensils are welcome. I quickly check the grill brushes. Does he like Lego? Yes, and he’d appreciate almost any set because it shows you know me. A personalized drinkware set to show you know him, or a nice set of coasters. A masculine-scented candle is also a plus. Soaps, too. If I were your uncle and you gave me one, I’d be delighted.
Give him a movie called “The Man from Uncle.” It’s a remake of an old series. It’s very well done.
Damn heavy duty socks.
Bluetooth speakers: Use them for working out or in the garden. Great models for under €30 on Amazon.
No cologne. If he likes motivational books, give him one!
Consumer goods such as artisanal meats (think Spanish and other chorizos, or dried game), fine cheeses, gourmet olive oil, and beer from a specialty brewery that’s not easily accessible.
My wife’s uncle loves Costco hot dogs and Binaca spray.

Your uncle is very close to me. Maybe something sporty, a nice pull-on sweatshirt, if he’s into that sort of thing. Another good multitool would always be handy. A lifesaver (see BIFL subtitle). I just reread your post about student budgeting; the gifts mentioned probably cost around $100 or more. As an uncle, I would be very proud if my nephew/niece gave me something. Maybe a cartoon showing how I’ve influenced their daily life. Maybe a piece of art to show off. Your uncle and I seem very motivated; I constantly doubt myself and want to improve. If he discovered I had even the slightest idea how to inspire others, I would melt.
Spend time with him. Take him to a game or an event.
Books: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Thanks for your comment. The Human Search for Meaning. Say Yes to Life.
As a guy over 50, I love gift cards. All it takes is a regular Visa or Mastercard and a nice note from you. That note will probably mean more to him than anything else. He can use the card however he wants.
